Eulogy: Sister Valerie Donavan, FDNSC (15.09.1924 – 11.01.2026)
“It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to make music to my God all my days.” (Psalm 92:1, adapted)
These words adapted from Psalm 92 capture well the driving force behind our dear Sister Valerie’s life. On Sunday, the 11th January, our much‑loved Sister Valerie gently slipped into the loving embrace of the One who had been her strength, her passion, and the music of her soul throughout her 101 years. For nearly eight decades she lived her vows as a Daughter of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart with fidelity, humility, and generous service.
Eulogy: Sr Margaret Reis FDNSC (11.07.1933 – 26.12.2025)
“She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks… She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.” — Proverbs 31:17, 20
These words from the book of Proverbs are a beautiful summary of our sister, Margaret’s life: a rich life of 92 years, lived with Jesus and for Jesus. On Friday 26th December our dear sister, Margaret, gently and peacefully breathed her last breath as she surrendered to her loving God whom she had served lovingly and faithfully as a Daughter of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart for close to seven decades.
Eulogy: Sr Caterina Merlino FDNSC (23.09.1938 – 16.10.2025)
She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household … She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for the task. (Proverbs 31:15)
These beautiful words from the Book of Proverbs aptly capture the unassuming dedication and homeliness of Caterina’s life. On Thursday, October 16th, the Feast of St Margaret Mary, the Lord gently called Caterina to Himself. She was eighty-seven years of age and had been a Daughter of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart for sixty-one years.
Eulogy: Sr Marie Duchesne (24.05.1933 – 14.10.2025)
Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skilfully, and shout for joy. (Psalm 33:2-3)
Sister Marie Duchesne, Mary Lavin, was born to James and Mary Lavin (nee Doggett) in Sydney on 24 May 1933. She was the second of their three children and their only daughter. On Tuesday, 14 October, Duchesne realised her life’s goal when Jesus gently took her to himself. She was ninety-three years of age and in the seventy-third year of her religious profession.
Passing of His Holiness Pope Francis
The Province of the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Pope Francis. We join with the Church and the wider community in giving thanks for his life and for his leadership of our Church.
Eulogy: Sr Josephine Kenny (16.01.1935 - 24.01.2025)
‘I have loved you with an everlasting love. I am constant in my affection for you.'
These words from the prophet Jeremiah capture well the driving force behind our dear Sister Jo’s life, as she had absolute confidence in the one who called her into life and loved her unconditionally. At approximately 8am on Friday 24th January she gently slipped into the loving embrace of the one who had loved her with an everlasting love, throughout her 97 years.

These words from Matthew’s Gospel capture well the driving force behind our dear Sister Marie’s life. Deep faith in the one who called her and loved her unconditionally. At approximately 5.15pm on Friday 8th November, our dear Sister, Marie, came face to face with the one she had lovingly and generously served for over seven decades as a Daughter of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.
Honouring Our Past, Rejoicing in Our Present, Embracing Our Future
From Thursday, August 22nd, to Monday, August 26th, the Sisters of the Australian Province gathered at Hartzer Park, our Retreat and Conference Center, for the annual Province Assembly for 2024. This year’s Assembly was especially significant, as it took place during the Congregation's 150th Jubilee Year. Around 50 of our sisters gathered for a wonderful and enriching Assembly in which Sr Philippa Murphy our Provincial facilitated. This year’s Assembly was truly a special gathering, as the sisters reflected and celebrated 150 years of the congregation over 5 wonderful days.
150th Jubilee letter of Congratulations from the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory
The Hon Eva Lawler MP, Former Chief Minister of the Northern Territory congratulated the Sisters for the 150th Jubilee Year.
Ms Lawler extended her thanks on behalf of the people of the Northern Territory, for the 116 years of continuing work the Daughters have done in the NT.
Happy 150th Foundation Day 1874 - 2024
On this day, August 30th, 1874, 150 years ago, the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart were founded. Today, we celebrate this 150th Jubilee with hearts filled with thanksgiving for the last 150 years.
Letter of Congratulations from the Prime Minister of Australia – The Hon. Anthony Albanese MP
In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, the Honorable Anthony Albanese MP, Prime Minister of Australia, sent a heartfelt letter congratulating the Sisters of the Australian Province on this momentous Jubilee. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Prime Minister for his warm wishes, graciously offered on behalf of the people of Australia.
2024 Assembly
From August 22nd to 26th, the Sisters of the Australian Province gathered at Hartzer Park for their annual Province Assembly, marking a significant moment during the Congregation's 150th Jubilee Year. Lay participants, including Partners in Mission, Associates, and long-time friends, joined the Sisters to reflect on the Charism of the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, with a special emphasis on the Jubilee.
Unveiling and Blessing of the Busts of Fr Jules Chevalier MSC and Mother Marie Louise Hartzer FDNSC
As part of our 150th Jubilee Celebrations, the Province commissioned bronze busts of our founder, Fr. Jules Chevalier MSC, and our first Superior General, Mother Marie Louise Hartzer FDNSC. These exquisite sculptures were crafted by British-Australian artist Andrew Poppleton in New South Wales and cast in bronze by Meridian Sculptures in Melbourne, Victoria. On Sunday, August 25th, these busts were unveiled and blessed at Hartzer Park by our Provincial, Sr. Philippa Murphy FDNSC, and Fr. Pat Mara MSC.
Opening and Blessing of the Yarning Circle and Native Garden
To commemorate our 150th Jubilee, the Province proudly inaugurated and blessed a Yarning Circle and Native Garden at our Conference and Retreat Centre in Hartzer Park on August 25th, 2024. This Yarning Circle and Native Garden serve as a lasting tribute to our First Nations Peoples, honoring the Daughters' ministry and partnership with First Nations communities in Australia for over 114 years.
